Day 158 – Painters Week

The painters were back to paint the trim, doors, and the cabinets. If you’re building an Adair Home, this is one of the areas you can save a lot of money. If you have the time, equipment, and skill you can do all the painting yourself. We were given about two weeks on the schedule to get the trim and doors painted and with working a full time job and raising three small children, we just don’t have the time to take on a project like that, so we decided to hire a painter.

You can elect to have the painting done through Adair Homes, but we were able to find a good painter who was less than what Adair Homes was going to charge, so we decided to go with our own guy. He’s been great to work with. He is very busy but has been able to fit us in when we need him, making this much less stressful to manage.

If you’ve been following the blog, you know about the incorrect cabinet color being delivered. Our painter was able to repaint them to a bright white that will match the trim and look better with the tile back splash.

A Doorway Left Untrimmed

A small frustration this week from was that one of the doorways did not get trimmed out. There had been a couple of different drawings, and on an earlier drawing there wasn’t a door, then at some point a door got added. When we were walking through once the house was framed, we asked about leaving the door off. We had thought that meant that it would still get trimmed, but apparently it did not.

I communicated with the customer care team and they explained that Adair Homes is not a custom home builder. We are toeing the line of a custom home and I have had several of the trades tell me that the house is the “most custom” home they have worked on for Adair Homes. Also, an Instagram follower said that they talked to an Adair Homes employee that said that they aren’t really good at doing custom homes.

This is a good reminder that Adair Homes is not a custom home builder. I think they do very well with homes that are standard; but the more upgrades you do and the more customization, the more that can go wrong. They have systems in place for their standard homes, but don’t have all the kinks ironed out for customization.

From my understanding, in the past there was very little customization that was allowed. By keeping things standard and less custom they are able to predict exactly how the build will go and this allows them to keep the prices lower. The more custom, the more it costs the builder and that transfers on to the homeowner. Just another thing to add to the list of to-do items once we move in.

Final Month Schedule for New Home Construction

Next, week our excavator will be back to set up the forms for the city required sidewalks and the concrete is scheduled to be poured around January 8th.

We are now less than a month away from closing! I can’t believe we are so close. The painters are going to be finishing up this week and everything else looks like it is on schedule. An exciting time for sure!

Paint  doors/trim – 12/26-1/6
Plumber, HVAC, electrician back to install fixtures – 1/7
Appliance delivered – 1/10/19
Paint touch up – 1/16
Pre-walk through – 1/17
Close – 1/25

We will see if we get any delays from the city, but we’re crossing our fingers that we get everything done in time. It’s going to be a busy month for us trying to get everything done and getting ready to move!
